Catching Up

Hi there! Woah, did you just feel a bit weird coming here without a recipe in sight?? Okay, how about these cookies, this ice cream, and these fudge cups? Or maybe a video featuring my wonderfully creamy no churn Coconut Chocolate Chip Vegan Ice Cream will do the trick?

All better? 🙂

If you haven’t noticed, I’m a bit weirded out—but in a good way—about this post, too! It marks my first post ever without a recipe.

Okay, fine, my first post ever without a recipe is actually my first post ever. On the blog. But that doesn’t count because it was ages ago… and no one should look back that far. No one. (I just cringed b/c I know at least one person went and looked back that far). I asked for it though, right?

Blergh.

Anywho, before we veer waaaaay too far off track, I just wanted to take this low-key, end of the three-day weekend to tell you about a few life updates. Chat, sit with you, maybe enjoy a few steaming cups of tea, coffee, or even a frappe.

What’s new with you? New job, new apartment, new hairstyle??

Btw, I was totally planning on cutting like 8 or more inches off of my current hairdo, but then I thought that I should document it for this post, but then then I was like, what if folks don’t want to see hairstyles on a food blog? Then I was like, I have to lay down. This overthinking, and obviously carrying 8 extra inches of hair, is making me dizzy. .

But that’s not the update. Plus, it doesn’t count if the update is for a hypothetical thing that only may occur. Alright, drumroll please… WE MOVED!!! Erik and I moved from Maine to Massachusetts! Namely, the Boston area.

Goodbye, Maine.

Truth be told, we’re city folk. We didn’t necessarily think this—mostly because we’ve been living in big cities all our lives. Erik’s lived in the LA area, then SF. Me, I lived in Oakland, San Jose… then met up with Erik in San Francisco… then we moved to San Diego.

It’s funny how that is, right? You don’t really like the place you live until you leave it and realize that it was actually way more your style than you’d originally thought. That’s kind of how Erik and I felt about San Diego. We didn’t appreciate it ’til we moved. In fact, we both didn’t truly appreciate California til we left. Now we get all homesick just thinking about it.

Fortunately for us, Boston has become more and more “home” in the past few years. My mom, my sister Jenny and PB (my 3 year old nephew, real name: Dylan) live there. And we basically miss them something fierce when we’re away. Literally, in the past two years of living in Maine we scheduled everything around visits to Boston to see family.

Now all we have to do is send a sassy text or incessantly call ’til my mom actually notices her phone ringing to hang out with them. How cool is that? 🙂

Also, more truth be told, Maine wasn’t totally our style. It’s a beautiful place that’s home to so many lovely people, but it wasn’t what we were used to. It was sooooo quiet, guys!! If you live in a less populated place, or better yet, grew up in one, you’re probably completely used to it. For me and Erik, we were a bit unnerved. .

We also missed walking everywhere so, so much. In Boston, most people walk everywhere, all the time. How cool is that? Anyway, I’m self-checking myself and noticing that I’m getting a tad rambly here. Point is, we’ve moved and we haven’t felt better about something since… since we started this blog. 🙂

We’re seriously looking forward to what Erik keeps calling “Summer in Boston!!!!!!” Yep, with the shouting and everything. We’ve already walked more places in one weekend than we did our entire two years in Maine. J/k. But not. Okay, a bit. 😉

Other bits of news… I’m thinking about doing a cookbook since so many folks have been asking for one… but I’m not sure the timing is right. Just out of curiosity, if you’d love to see a cookbook, what would you want it to be themed around? Cookies? No Bake? Healthy Sweets?

  1. Ah, that’s some amazing news, Demeter! Moving closer to family – or actually so close you can just quickly sassy-text 😉 your mama to hang out soon after – is a great choice. Family is so important and if your heart feels more home in Boston, too, that’s two birds with one stone [what’s the vegan version of that saying, though ;)??].
Go for the hair cut! I’m the least daring person ever when my hair is concerned but actually had almost 12 inches cut off by spontaneous decision a few weeks ago and it feels so good. Granted, it took some days of regretting my decision but now I feel such a lot more confident and ready for summer. Should it decide to arrive and then stick with us for a while, that is.
On a final note: I very much like non-food posts and getting to know more about you. We’ll pretend that’s not creepy but just part of blogging life, eh?

    1. Thanks so much, Miss Polkadot! 🙂 You’re so right–we’ve got to move to where our hearts are. 🙂 Vegan version? Lolol. How about chopping two carrots with one knife? . Wow, 12 inches!! You are seriously brave! Yes, the summer seems quite hesitant to make an appearance right now… it’s been raining nonstop here in Boston! Final note: that was so not creepy. 😉 If we’re not here to connect, then why are we here at all right? Sending you big hugs. xo

  2. Oh what wonderful news. I think that part of living with out regrets is making the time to be close with family. I dragged my husband halfway across the world to be close to my mom and it one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Boston is a grand walkable city (we live in RI) you’ll be so happy there. And the great food markets, oy, you’ll be in heaven.
8 inches huh? Go for it! It is only hair and you’ll feel so much lighter. All the best with the move -Hanne

    1. Aw, thank you Hanne. 🙂 So true about making time to be close to family. <3 <3 I'm so happy to hear that it all worked out with the move to be nearer to your mom. 🙂 Boston is just wonderful! We've been visiting and have lived here for short period of time--we're just excited to finally settle in. Thanks so much! Sending you big hugs! xoxo

  3. Congrats on your move, Demeter! It sounds like you and your husband were meant to be in Boston. And yay for walking everywhere! Although Maine does sound lovely, I definitely couldn’t do with that much quietness either. Best of luck to you in your new home!

    1. Thank you, Gayle! 🙂 We just love it here! We never did get used to the quiet–not in 2 years there. Lol. Big hugs to you, my friend!

  4. Eeeeeep!!! I’ve been waiting for this (excitedly I might add). Aw makes me so happy that you are happy and it feels right and good and all the warm and fuzzies! And yes, silly faces with your mama definitely falls under the fuzzies umbrella☔️ I totally know what you mean about not realizing what kinda living situation person you are until you leave it. With traveling and considering where I want to move to one of these days I have realized how much of a small town person I am and how much living in a city is foreign to me. But foreign in a kinda-want-to-try-it-way too. Anyways, HECK YES on the cookbook! The no-bake theme just seems right for you, but all sound like something I’d eagerly eat…I mean read. And I’m a little jelly that you could actually cut off 8 inches and not be bald (grrrr grow hair, grow!) but we need photos if/when this happens! I hope this is not the last non-recipe post. xoxo

    1. Aw, best bestie ever!!! 🙂 <3 It feels so right. 🙂 Sometimes you think things are okay, but "okay" actually means you haven't been happy in awhile, ya know? I hope you find your small town/a little bit city for adventure purposes perfect location one day. 🙂 So true on no bake! Haha. Shall I send my 8 inches to you? Lol. That's what besties are for, right? xo

  5. i’m happy you guys found your best place to be. my partner, our 3 dogs, and me live in a small rustic house in the finger lakes region of new york state, the house set back up in the woods. we have a smaller guest cabin and a large, deep ice cold pond for swimming. we have heard so many times from city visitors that they could never live here, but totally get why we love it so much.
it’s fine that there are people who need to live in a city, and fine that there are people like me who need the solitude of living in the woods. life is way to short to be living in a way that doesn’t fit you.
as for the cook book idea, i’m into making desserts that are as healthy as they are tasty. that is what drew me to your web-site. the only things i use for sweeteners are fruit, and small amounts of maple syrup. i had a friend tell me he didn’t like my desserts because they aren’t sweet enough. that’s okay- more for me!
baking with minimal sweeteners bring out the true taste of food, not mask it in sweetness.

    1. Aw, thank you Fred. 🙂 Your rustic home sounds absolutely amazing. When you’re surrounded by your loved ones, and living the lifestyle you enjoy–what could be better, right? Erik and I did have our dreams of living in a cabin, out in the peaceful woods… but we actually ended up moving to a small city in Maine. Maybe that’s where we went wrong? Haha. But you’re so right, life is way too short. More for you: Lol. Yep!! Healthy desserts definitely have a whole different vibe. Anyway, I’m so happy that you’re here, enjoying making these real food treats with me. Big hugs to you, your partner and your 3 dogs! 🙂

  6. Boston is the best!! We went last winter for the first time and had an awesome time and really loved the city. We’re actually on our way home from Portland and had a fun time…but it reminded me a lot of New Jersey…where we’re from. It was beautiful and we did go whale watching and that was incredible but I don’t think I could live there! It’s also great to be near family and hang out whenever you want 🙂 Boston is cooler IMO! Hope you guys are doing well!

    1. It’s such a wonderful city! Glad you enjoyed Portland. 🙂 Portland was actually WAY more city than the city Erik and I were living in Maine. Haha. Thanks so much, Jessica. Wishing you safe travels!
