Spooktacular Halloween Puppy Chow!
It’s nearly Halloween and totally time to start busting out all of your favorite spooky treats and eats! Ever since I shared this ghost s’mores dip, y’all been asking for more Halloween party foods. This Halloween Puppy Chow is one of my faves because it’s so easy to make, everyone loves it, and it’s a colorful, festive sight to see (and eat)!
It couldn’t be easier to make Halloween muddy buddies! All you have to do is melt a few ingredients together, toss in Chex cereal, shake to coat with powdered sugar and add in your favorite seasonal candy. That’s it! The kids will love it, your friends will love it, heck… you‘ll love it. Happy Halloween!
Halloween Muddy Buddies Ingredients
- The Base: chocolate chips, peanut butter and unsalted butter create the sticky sweet coating on this Halloween puppy chow recipe.
- The Cereal & Coating: rice or corn Chex cereal adds a crunchy crispiness while powdered sugar protects the sticky coating and adds sweetness.
- The Add-ons: the fun part! For festive color, I love adding Halloween M&M’s, candy corn, three sizes of googly eyes, and this colorful Halloween sprinkles mix!
How to Make Halloween Puppy Chow
Halloween puppy chow is one of my favorite treats to make for this ghoulish season because it’s so yummy, doesn’t require the oven, and is packed with the cutest add-ins!
- Add chocolate, peanut butter, and butter in a large mixing bowl and melt in the microwave. Stir in between heating increments until smooth. Stir in vanilla and salt.
- Fold in Chex mix cereal until every bit is well coated in chocolate and peanut butter.
- Split the powdered sugar into two gallon-sized zip bags. Split the Chex mix cereal evenly into the two bags. Close and shake until the cereal is very well coated in powdered sugar.
- Transfer Chex mix Halloween muddy buddies into a serving bowl and fold in Halloween M&M’s, candy corn, googly eyes, and Halloween sprinkles. Save a little extra to put on top to make it really pop.
Spooky ideas: add googly eyes to amazing pumpkin cupcakes, Oreo fluff, and monster cookies to make them All Hallows’ Eve ready!

- Halloween Treat Bags: stuff these bags with Halloween muddy buddies and hand them out. You can also fill these bags with spooky stickers and little toys!
- Swap the Candy: you can swap M&M’s and candy corn with candy pumpkins, mini peanut butter cups, whatever you prefer!
- Serve in a ghastly pumpkin dish with a moving hand. Whenever someone reaches into the bowl, the creepy skeleton hand moves!
Storing Instructions
- Storing Instructions: Store in a spooky airtight container in the refrigerator or at room temperature (in a cool, dark place) for up to 1 week.
- Freezing Instructions: Store in a freezer-friendly container for 1-2 months. Allow candy to thaw a bit before eating—it’s hard when frozen(!), but the muddy buddies themselves are fine to eat right away.

Halloween Puppy Chow – Muddy Buddies!
Ingredients
Halloween Puppy Chow
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ¾ cup creamy peanut butter
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 8 cups Chex cereal, rice or corn
- 1 ¾ – 3 cups powdered sugar, depending on desired sweetness and color of muddy buddies1
Spooky Toppings
- 1 ½ cups Halloween M&M’s Mix
- 1 cup candy corn
- ½ cup googly eyes
- ½ cup Halloween sprinkles
Instructions
- Add chocolate, peanut butter, and butter to a large, microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second increments, stirring in between, until smooth. Stir in salt and vanilla extract.
- Stir in cereal, folding until completely coated. Allow to cool for 2-3 minutes.
- Split the chocolate-coated cereal into two gallon-sized resealable bags (4 cups each). Split powdered sugar equally into both bags. Shake until cereal is fully covered in powdered sugar.
- Transfer to a Halloween serving bowl with spooky toppings. Fold just a bit, making sure toppings are visible for a colorful treat!
- Serve with mummy jalapeño poppers, ghost s'mores dip, and spider pizzas!

- 1: I used 1 ¾ cup for a balance of milk chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar sweetness. But around 3 cups yields “snowier” muddy buddies.
