Apple pie spice is a spice mixture consisting of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and a few other spices. It is mainly used in baking recipes to accentuate or create the flavor of apple pie in muffins, breads, pies, ice cream and more.

Recipe for Apple Pie Spice Ingredients

If you’re wondering what spices are in apple pie spice, you might be surprised about a few of the ingredients, including ginger, which adds a subtle and delicious spice!

  • Cinnamon: this is the base and bulk of this apple pie spice blend recipe. It creates a warm spiced foundation.
  • Nutmeg: you can use freshly ground nutmeg for incredible flavor or store-bought.
  • Allspice: with such a big aromatic profile, we’ll use much less of this spice to enhance the apple pie flavors.
  • Cardamom & Ginger: my two favorites in this recipe! Adds depth and a little fresh spice. You can skip if desired (but I don’t recommend it).

Pumpkin Pie Spice vs Apple Pie Spice

The difference between pumpkin pie spice and apple pie spice lies in the flavor and the ingredients. While both use cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, apple pie spice has cardamom while pumpkin pie spice has cloves. Pumpkin pie spice is warmer and soothing in flavor while apple pie spice is a little spicier and cozy.

Storing Instructions

Store this apple pie spice blend recipe in an airtight spice jar container. You can keep this spice as long as the length of the shortest lasting spice in the mix. For example, your ground cinnamon lasts to September 2027 and your ground allspice lasts until October 2026. In the example, this homemade spice blend will last until October 2026.
