Have you ever looked into your pantry, grabbed a jar of seasoning, and thought, “Why can’t I learn how to make that?” Well, you can! And today, we’re starting with garlic salt!

Delicious, flavorful, and so easy to use, homemade garlic salt can be added to any food to spice up its flavor. Bland soup? Add it. Just-okay garlic toast? Sprinkle it.

The Ingredients

This garlic salt recipe is made with just a few ingredients. I’ve included an extra ingredient that’s entirely optional, but makes the recipe so much more delicious.

  • Salt – the base for this recipe
  • Garlic powder – adds crucial garlic flavor
  • Dried parsley – pretty and herbaceous
  • Onion powder (optional, but the crucial secret ingredient!)

What is Garlic Salt?

Garlic salt is a dry seasoning mix that’s made with several ingredients, including salt, dried garlic powder, and dried herbs. Some folks even like to add parmesan, but I avoid it to keep this recipe simpler and shelf-stable.

This seasoning is used to flavor dishes before or after cooking and can be used to add flavor to soups, bread, and more. Or, it can be added to a recipe during cooking so the flavor deepens during the cooking process.

It’s great for adding an extra garlic boost to dishes like this taco dip. I enjoy sprinkling some on a batch of air fryer potato wedges or air fryer french fries for a little extra zhuzh. And, if I’m in a double-zhuzh kinda mood, I’ll then dip those fries in some onion ring sauce. Yum!

Garlic Powder vs. Garlic Salt

Is garlic salt the same as garlic powder? What is the difference between the two? You might’ve wondered one or two of these things on occasion. I’m here with answers!

Garlic powder is a simple, 1-ingredient dry spice that’s made only with garlic, while garlic salt is a multi-ingredient dry spice that’s made with garlic powder, salt, and more.

How to Make Garlic Salt

I’ll go through the simple steps on how to make garlic salt. Just keep in mind that exact instructions and measurements are further down this post, in the recipe card. 😉

First, add salt and garlic powder to a small bowl.

Next, add dried parsley and onion powder. Feel free to skip the onion powder. However, I highly recommend adding this secret ingredient because it adds a delicious, deeper flavor to your diy garlic salt.

Then, whisk all the ingredients until well mixed. Don’t worry–if these ingredients separate a bit once they’re sitting in your pantry, simply give the jar a shake to mix it thoroughly again.

Pour this mixture into an airtight container. Store in the pantry or in the cupboard until ready to use! Also, try sprinkling on roasted garlic for a tasty treat.

Garlic Salt Substitute

Today’s recipe is a great substitute in case you don’t have it ready to go for any recipes that call for it.

Simply follow the instructions to mix together garlic powder, salt, and a few other ingredients to use as a garlic salt substitute. You can easily use this on toast, pasta, and so much more!

If you’d rather use fresh garlic, mix together minced garlic with salt and add it to your dish. Just bear in mind that fresh garlic salt cannot keep for as long as when it’s made with garlic powder.

Storing Instructions

How long can I keep this in my pantry?

You can keep this homemade spice for up to 6 months, if stored in an airtight container.

As I have noted on many recipes, the best environment for keeping your goodies fresh is cool, dark, and away from direct sunlight. This note includes homemade spices!

I make this recipe about 3x per year. It’s the real deal and it rotates some base spices to keep them fresher. My husband uses garlic salt (now this and not store bought bottle) more than any other spice. Thank you for this great recipe!

Hi there! It doesn’t really matter, but remember that the texture/grain size of the salt will come through in the garlic salt. I used table salt, but in the end it’s up to your preferences. 🙂 Hope you enjoy!

I know, right? There’s just something special about using a seasoning that you made yourself. ☺️

Does it matter what kind of salt you use? I typically have several different kinds of salt on hand. kosher, sea, ionized table salt, etc.
