But let me just tell you, today’s sour cream and onion dip recipe is one of my absolute favorites. It’s thick and creamy with bold sour cream and onion flavor that just hits the spot. It’s incredible and one that I get asked to make over and over again.
Growing up, one of my favorite flavors was Lay’s sour cream and onion—in dip form, chip form, any way I could take it. Let’s just say little me (and little you) will just absolutely love making this super easy homemade sour cream and onion dip. Just whisk a few ingredients together, grab some chips, and get the (flavor) party started!

Sour Cream and Onion Dip – Recipe Ingredients
- Sour Cream & mayonnaise – we’ll use both for a more complex creaminess and flavor in our chip dip
- Onion – we’ll use two types of onion for bold onion flavor: dried minced onion and onion powder
- Dijon mustard – just enough is used to bring out the tanginess of sour cream
- Garlic powder – helps to enhance the flavor of onion
- Salt & pepper – use as much or as little as you’d like, but I’ve included my recommendations
- Chives – chop up fresh chives for a beautiful mix-in and garnish that’s signature for the best sour cream and onion dip

How to Make Sour Cream and Onion Dip
How do you make sour cream and onion dip, anyway? I’ll show you how in just a few easy steps that’ll yield thick ‘n creamy dip for chips!
- Stir together all diy sour cream and onion dip ingredients: sour cream, mayonnaise, minced onion, onion powder, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and chives until well mixed.
- Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and deepen.
- Serve in a dipping bowl with chips, veggies, and crackers and garnish with chives.

Sour Cream and Onion Dip
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
