Healthy Vegan Cookie Dough Recipe (Edible!)

a delicious 5 ingredient healthy cookie dough recipe for vegan cookie dough that’s safe to eat raw & eggless.

Did you ever eat raw cookie dough when you were a kid? You know, you wait until your mom turns her back, claw out a huge clump of cookie dough from one of those yellow-wrapped logs and cram it into your mouth as quickly as possible before she sees?

I may have done that once or twice. Or maybe I learned my lesson from getting sick over that raw, totally not edible cookie dough. And then I learned to save all the little cookie dough bites from cookie dough ice cream. Then, mash those together to have one big ball of actually edible cookie dough to feast on.

Or something. I mean, it’s not like I was/am obsessed with cookie dough. Or anything.

Now, as a less adventurous adult, I’m all about eating perfectly safe-to-eat edible cookie dough. Skip the stomachaches, level up the YUM factor. So today, I’m re-sharing a recipe I published back in 2018 for what was formerly known as 5 Ingredient Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites Recipe (Vegan, Gluten Free, Dairy-Free, Refined Sugar-Free).

No, I wasn’t known for my brevity back then. Lol.

Today, I’m sharing all new info for the same beloved vegan edible cookie dough recipe and I hope you get to try it! (Or rediscover it if you’re forgotten it.)

How to Make Vegan Cookie Dough

Learn how to make vegan cookie dough that’s edible and healthy with just a few steps:

Line

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

Add Ingredients

Add oat flour, maple syrup, coconut oil and pure vanilla extract to a medium bowl.

Stir

Using a spoon, stir and fold until the mixture thickens. I like to switch to using a rubber spatula at this point to fold all the ingredients together until it resembles cookie dough. Fold in vegan chocolate chips.

Scoop

If you want cookie dough bites, follow this step. Using a cookie scoop, scoop and drop balls of cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheet. If desired, dot vegan chocolate chips onto each ball and roll into a smooth sphere.

Allow to firm up for about 5 minutes and enjoy the best vegan cookie dough!

How to Store this Vegan Cookie Dough

Some folks like enjoying these healthy edible cookie dough bites on Day 1, as that’s when they’re softest. However, others enjoy this cookie dough all the way through 2 weeks. I recommend keeping this cookie dough for up to 1 week.

Just make sure to store your cookie dough in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

To Soften: I love popping a few of these vegan cookie dough bites onto a plate and warming them up in the microwave. Heat in 10-second increments until softened. It’s the BEST when the vegan chocolate chips are melted as you bite into each soft ball of cookie dough.

  1. Hi Demeter!

Is it safe and healthy to eat raw oat flour? I am pregnant and my daughter is constipated (sorry, TMI) so I don’t want to make it worse for her (or for me).

I made them with regular butter since I didn’t have coconut oil and they were soooo delicious. I made them for my daughter but I was tempted to eat them all in the process. Thank you. I would try your other recipes.

  2. This recipe looks so perfect and easy! I have a dairy allergy in my classroom and since we cook a lot I’m always looking for vegan recipes so she won’t be left out. For one of our activities, we use cookie cutters to make hand shaped cookies. Do you think the consistency would be ok to do that with this recipe? Thanks for any tips!

    1. Thanks Michelle! This recipe is a bit soft when it’s first made, but if you drop the “dough” into the cookie cutters and press it down into the shape, then chill them a bit, it’ll firm up. Hope everyone enjoys!

  3. These are so good. I made my own oat flour as I had none and did not feel like going to the store. I just happen to have some mini dark chocolate chips (vegan) that needed to be used and house that was to hot to bake in. I was not convinced the maple syrup would make it sweet enough but I was wrong. It was perfect. I grabbed one to eat on my after dinner walk and it was just the right size and sweetness. Not to mention I did not feel guilty for eating it. I plugged the recipe into MyFitnessPal and here is what I was given:

    1. Hi Jen! I’m so glad that you enjoyed my recipe. 🙂 I really tried to use as little maple syrup as possible, so I’m happy to hear that it was sweet enough for you! Thanks for calculating the nutrition facts and sharing. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Amanda! Coconut flour is much more absorbent than oat flour, so it would end up being much more dry. Hope this helps!

    1. Wooohoo!!! Your excitement is totally infectious! 🙂 Can’t wait to hear what you think, Palutena! xo

      1. Oh. My. YUMMINESS!! I don’t know how I survived the 5-minute wait while these set! I ate a lot of the dough for the cookie dough… the cookie dough-dough? Anyhow, these tasted like a DREAM and my family ate them so quickly that it was probably a record!

      2. Hehe!!!! I’m seriously LOVING your comment!! 🙂 So pleased that you and your family enjoyed them. Happy no baking!! .

    1. Yes, that would work! I’m just not sure about the amount. Try increasing it a bit and adjusting until you get the consistency you’d like. 🙂

    1. Haha yes! These are perfect for combating those ever present cookie dough emergencies! .

    1. I think you’re really going to enjoy these bites Molly. 🙂 Can’t wait to hear what you think!
