Delicious ‘n Easy Buckeye Recipe
I can’t think of making today’s buckeye balls without bringing up my sister Monica. Years ago, she attended Ohio State University and gifted me an OSU sweater when I visited. Whenever and wherever I wore that sweater, people would shout to me, “O-H!” and I would startle and remember to call back “I-O!” (If you’re an OSU fan/alum, you’ll know what I mean). ๐ So here’s to making delicious Ohio-inspired and originating-from Buckeye Balls!
Today’s buckeye balls recipe is packed with whipped-to-perfection peanut butter flavor sweetened with powdered sugar and a touch of vanilla, all enrobed in smooth, semi-sweet chocolate. This no bake candy is such a fun treat to gift during the holidays, Christmas, and football games!

Creamy Buckeye Recipe Ingredients
- Peanut Butter: use creamy, smooth peanut butter, avoid natural which is too runny
- Chocolate: semi-sweet chocolate chips or candy melts will do
- Butter: use unsalted butter and make sure to soften it to ensure easier mixing
- Powdered Sugar: don’t pack and press this into the cup, simply scoop to measure
- Vanilla: as always, use pure vanilla extract and skip the imitation for better flavor in this buckeye dessert recipe

So you wanna make this buckeye candy recipe the easy way? Follow along as I show you how to create fluffy, peanut buttery centers with rich chocolate coating you can sink you candy-loving teeth into!
- Using a stand mixer, beat together butter, peanut butter, and vanilla until smooth and creamy. Beat powdered sugar in increments until a thick dough forms.

- Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop, scoop and drop peanut butter balls onto a lined baking sheet. Roll into smooth balls and insert a toothpick into each one. Freeze until firm.

- Melt chocolate in a small cup, then dip each peanut butter ball into the chocolate, leaving a little uncovered opening at the top. Place on a large baking sheet.

- Remove toothpicks and press together the holes to close.
- Chill until chocolate is firm and enjoy this old fashioned buckeye balls recipe! For a festive spread, serve with Rolo pretzels, peppermint bark, and candy cane hearts.

Tips for the Best Recipe for Buckeyes
- Use a narrow, short cup for dipping that fits your hand and the truffle in just so. It’ll be easier to dip the truffle in deeply and easily.
- Use a cookie scoop: it’ll be easier to create uniform sized candy and scoop faster, like with Oreo truffles.
- Insert the toothpick 3/4 of the way into the buckeye ball. Less and the toothpick will fall off when dipping in chocolate, more and the buckeye might break in half.
- Reheat the chocolate again if needed: it will begin to set as you dip over 3 dozen truffles. If needed, add in a little coconut oil or nonstick spray before reheating to help it stay softened and smooth.
How to Store Buckeye Balls
- To Refrigerate: place candy in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-3 weeks, keeping away from savory and/or hot foods.
- To Freeze: place homemade buckeye candy in an airtight, freezer-friendly container for 1-3 months. Make sure to thaw a few minutes before enjoying.
