What is an Irish Mule, Anyway?

An Irish Mule is a spritzy, light cocktail made with Irish whiskey, ginger beer and lime juice. There are other kinds of mules, including the Tennessee Mule, Kentucky Mule and more. The main difference between these mule cocktails? The region where the whiskey originates.

To make a proper Irish Mule, you’ll need to use whiskey from Ireland, such as Bushmills, Jameson or Powers. You’ll make the mule in a copper mug, the signature mule cup. This copper mug is used to insulate the coldness of the beverage from the warmth of your hands, thereby keeping your Irish Mule frosty for longer than in a regular glass.

How to Make an Irish Mule

Learning how to make an Irish Mule is super simple and done in just a few steps with even fewer ingredients. Check it out:

Place your copper mugs on the counter where you’re making the Irish Mule drinks. Here are the copper mugs that I’m using.

Add plenty of ice to the mug—the more ice you use, the colder your drink will be.

Pour whiskey and fresh lime juice into the mug. I highly recommend using fresh-squeezed lime juice since it tastes so much better and less bitter than the bottled kind. I’ll use an electric citrus juicer to speed things along when making fresh lime juice. It’s been a total timesaver!

Pour ginger beer over the ice, whiskey and lime juice, until you hit nearly the top of the mug. Grab a mixing spoon and gently stir everything together to mix.

Garnish with a sprig of mint and a lime wheel or wedge. Sip and enjoy the best Irish Mule!
