How to make 7 Layer Dip
Learn how to make 7 layer dip, or 7 layer bean dip, with a few simple steps that include mixing two ingredients, then layering the rest–super easy!
Start making this 7 layer dip recipe by mixing refried beans and taco seasoning to a bowl. I like to use a hand mixer to go quicker, but you can do this by hand if needed.
Spread this seasoned bean dip layer onto the bottom of an 8-inch casserole dish.
Now it’s time to add the rest of the layers for your 7 layer dip! Smooth out each ingredient into an even layer, then add the next: guacamole, sour cream, cheddar cheese, Roma tomatoes, green onion, black olives.
Serve with baked tortilla chips with pineapple salsa, and cheese quesadillas or mushroom quesadillas!
Can you make 7 layer dip the night before?
Yes, you can make 7 layer dip with bean dip the night before! In fact, you can make it in advance and keep it for a maximum of 3-4 days. Just make sure to seal it tightly in an airtight container with the guacamole level fully coated, and thus protected, but the sour cream and refried beans layer above and below it. This will prevent browning.
Tips for the ultimate 7 Layer Bean Dip recipe
- Use a glass casserole dish. The transparent dish will showcase your beautiful seven layers in all of its glory, making the dip, in my opinion, so much tastier!
- Grab a hand mixer to mix together the seasoning and refried beans. It’s super quick and ensures the beans are thoroughly seasoned.
- Completely cover the guacamole layer with the layer on top of it and beneath it (sour cream and seasoned refried beans). This will help prevent browning by keeping away oxygen, and help your 7 layer Mexican dip last longer.
- Take a little extra care in spreading each ingredient out to a smooth, even layer. Just a little attention will ensure a prettier presentation with clear layers in your fabulous dip! <– similar to 7 layer Salad.
- Deseed the Roma tomatoes or press sliced tomatoes in paper towels to draw out any excess juice and prevent a juicy, runny mess in your dip, especially if keeping for 3-4 days.
- Make this homemade taco seasoning. It’s my very own recipe, with a little extra spice and loads of flavor! It’s so much better than store-bought, and really takes this Mexican-inspired dip and bean and cheese burritos to the next level.

Made mine with reduced fat sour cream and jalapeños instead of green onions and it turned out great. The taco seasoning in the beans added so much flavor. Thank you for the easy recipe!
