Who’s ready to make a Moscow mule with whiskey? Or perhaps we can get saucy and call it what it’s officially called… a Tennessee Mule?

Break out your favorite whiskey from Tennessee (come on, you totally have one), your favorite ginger beer and a few other things so we can head to the cocktail cart and make a spritzy delight.

Let’s learn how to make a Tennessee Mule!

What is a Tennessee Mule?

A Tennessee Mule is a cocktail made with Tennessee whiskey, lime juice and ginger beer. It’s delightfully refreshing, with a nice zing from the ginger and a bright zest from the limes, all to balance out that bit of whiskey.

What’s the difference between a Tennessee Mule and a Moscow Mule?

Let’s start with the basics: a Moscow Mule is a cocktail made with vodka, lime juice and ginger beer. All of that is poured over ice and stirred together.

A Tennessee Mule is a super simple twist on the Moscow Mule in that it replaces vodka with whiskey, preferably Tennessee whiskey.

Tennessee Mule: a Moscow Mule with Whiskey

Simply put, a Tennessee Mule is a Moscow Mule with Whiskey (and no vodka). It’s super easy to make, and comes together in just minutes. Check out how to make a Moscow mule with whiskey below!

How to Make a Moscow Mule with Whiskey

A proper Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug—this ensures that the heat from your hand is insulated from the coldness of the drink. However, you can make a Tennessee Mule in a highball glass—it’s up to you.

Today’s Tennessee Mule recipe is made in a highball glass to visually avoid confusion with a traditional Moscow Mule. 😉

Here’s a quick & easy overview of how to make a Moscow mule with whiskey:

  1. Grab a copper mug or highball glass and fill it to the brim with crushed ice or regular ice.
  2. Add your favorite Tennessee whiskey and lime juice.
  3. Crack open a can or bottle of ginger beer and pour it over the whiskey, lime juice and ice. Now, give it all a gentle stir to mix.
  4. Garnish with mint and lime, then enjoy. It’s really that simple to make a Tennessee Moscow mule!

How to Serve a Tennessee Mule Cocktail

  • Copper mug or Highball glass: this is totally up to you. Traditionally, a Moscow Mule is made in a copper mug to ensure that it stays insulated from the heat of your hand. Since we’re mixing it up with Tennessee whiskey, it’s no big deal to use a highball glass instead (especially if that’s all you have on hand).
  • Super Cold: the colder this Tennessee mule drink is, the better. While most mules call for lots of crushed ice, I used regular, larger cubes of ice because I find it stays colder for longer. Either way, make sure to pack your cup with plenty of ice for a super, super cold Tennessee mule cocktail.
  • Garnished: what’s the fun in making a cocktail if you’re not going to garnish it? 😉 Be sure to pick up fresh mint so you can garnish your mule cocktail with a beautiful, plump sprig of mint. Also, slice up some fresh limes so you can add a nice zesty wheel to the rim of your glass.
