Description
Healthy Banana Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins: tender & moist chocolate banana muffins. The best healthy chocolate banana muffins—fluffy & fudgy, with deep chocolate banana brownie flavor. SO GOOD!
Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup mashed, very ripe bananas (about 3 medium bananas)
- 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 1 flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water, whisk together, set for 15 mins)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup oat flour
- 1/2 cup raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup almond meal
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Add-ins
- 3/4 cup stevia-sweetened chocolate chips or refined sugar-free chocolate chunks (chopped)
Optional Topping
- 2–3 tablespoons stevia-sweetened chocolate chips or refined sugar-free chocolate chunks (chopped)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with muffin liners. Set aside.
- Peel bananas and add to a large mixing bowl. Using a pastry cutter (recommended), sturdy whisk or fork, mash bananas until smooth. Add the coconut oil, maple syrup, flax egg and vanilla. Whisk until well incorporated.
- In a medium bowl, sift together oat flour, cacao powder, almond meal, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Whisk together as long as you can. Switch to stirring and folding with a rubber spatula until well incorporated and no flour patches remain. Fold in chocolate chips. Batter will be very thick—do not add additional liquids.
- Using a large scoop, scoop and drop batter evenly into prepared muffin pan. Fill each cup all the way to the top for a smaller quantity of big, round-topped muffins, and ¾ of the way for a larger quantity of smaller muffins. Optionally, sprinkle with chocolate chips and lightly press down into each muffin top.
- Bake for 18-28 minutes. Mine took 23 minutes for large, high-topped muffins. Place muffin pan onto a cooling rack for 30 minutes. Then, gently transfer muffins directly onto cooling rack for 1 hour to cool completely. Enjoy! Storing instructions below.

I absolutely adore this recipe, have made it several times. How long do you think the muffins would take to cook if made in a mini muffin pan?
So glad to hear it Erin! Hm, I’d say try about 19 minutes at first, and adjust from there. Happy baking!
Can eggs be used instead of flaxmeal and if so how many eggs would be needed
I haven’t tried it myself, but it should be fine to swap for regular eggs at a 1:1 ratio. Happy baking!
Just made these and they are perfect… so easy and tasty. I’m obsessed with your recipes! 🙂
NICE!! Thank you so much, Erin! That truly made my day. 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you try next!
Such a perfect combo. This was my first time baking with a flax egg substitute and they turned out perfect.
Wow that’s so exciting! Glad to hear it was a success for you. 🙂
This was really good! My kids enjoyed it! Thanks for the recipe!
You’re so very welcome Sandra!
These Banana Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins are on my must-make list!
I know you’ll just love them!
Banana and chocolate make for the perfect flavors in a muffin, these were fantastic!
Yay! So happy you liked them Amanda!
Are these gluten free muffins? I’m baking with a friend in mind.
Hi Teri! Yep, as long as you use GF oat flour then the whole recipe is gluten free. Hope you and your friend enjoy! 🙂
These look great! I just made your banana muffins the other day and they were so good and moist. Could you recommend a replacement for the almond meal? I have a nut allergy. Thanks.
Hi Anne! I’m so pleased to hear you enjoyed the banana muffins. 🙂 As for the almond meal, you could try swapping for an equal amount of sunflower seed meal, or using 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons of oat flour. Hope this helps, and happy baking!
These sound delicious. Can rice flour be substituted for the almond flour?
Hi Mary. I would not recommend using rice flour as it is much more absorbent than almond flour, which means it would alter the taste and texture of the muffins quite a bit. Please check out my response to Anne in the comments section of this post for some alternative options. Hope this helps!
