Healthy No Sugar Added Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream (V, DF): a super easy, 5-ingredient recipe for the BEST deliciously creamy and chocolatey no churn peanut butter ice cream. Vegan, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Paleo option.

First there was Banana Peanut Butter Swirl Ice Cream… then there was Chocolate Peanut Butter Homemade Frosty (and Strawberry Coconut Sorbet)… and then there was this:

Healthy No Sugar Added Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream

Tell me, who’s SUPER excited about a healthy (for real) chocolate ice cream bursting with 1000% peanut butter YUM? Alright, 1000% might be a little too much… an exaggeration on my part because it just sounded more fun. 😉

But trust me, this healthy chocolate peanut butter ice cream is for Peanut Butter Lovers only. It’s super creamy, deliciously chocolatey, but most importantly, indulgently peanut-buttery.

What does that mean?

Peanut butter all throughout the chocolate base ice cream. Thick ribbons of peanut butter swirling deliciously through that creamy chocolate base. And…

Wait! There’s no “and” because that’s all. You. Need.

Scratch that—and, NO ADDED SUGAR.

Who’s loving this?

You don’t need the added sugar because we’ve got lovely bananas on our side, naturally ripened aka sweetened to perfection.

And before you ask, nope, this ice cream doesn’t taste like a bunch of bananas! 😉 It tastes like peanut butter, chocolate, more peanut butter, a hint of bananas, and even more peanut butter.

Sound good?

You won’t miss the added sugar, and you be truly dumbfounded by how creamy this Healthy No Sugar Added Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream truly is. The secret’s in the peanut butter and the bananas. Each add a creamy richness that negates the need for heavy cream, coconut cream, egg whites, or any of that stuff!

So go ahead, grab another scoop. You deserve it and you don’t need to think twice about it. Because this ice cream is guilt free. Oh yeah!

Best of all, this chocolate peanut butter ice cream is super easy to make. Even easier, if you skip the peanut butter swirl part… but honestly, the extra minute or two it takes to make the swirl is totally and absolutely worth it.

Description

Healthy No Sugar Added Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream (V, DF): a super easy, 5-ingredient recipe for the BEST deliciously creamy and chocolatey no churn peanut butter ice cream. Vegan, Dairy-Free, Paleo option, Healthy Desserts, Peanut Butter, No Sugar Added, Gluten-Free.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream

  • 4 medium bananas, sliced and frozen
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons unsweetened non-dairy milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted, natural peanut butter or almond butter for paleo option
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (use paleo-friendly if needed)

Optional Peanut Butter Swirl

Instructions

  1. Add bananas into food processor (preferred) or blender. Blend until crumbly. Add milk, blending until smooth.
  2. Add peanut butter and cocoa powder. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides of the processor as needed.
  3. Pour the ice cream mixture into a freezer-friendly container and smooth into an even layer; OR, optionally, do the following to create a Peanut Butter Swirl:

Pour half of the mixture into a freezer-friendly, airtight container. Tap the container a few times to create an even layer. Drizzle about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter over this layer of ice cream, creating big pockets of peanut butter. Keep it uneven for more chunky swirls!

Pour the remaining half of the ice cream mixture over the peanut butter swirl. Tap again to even out the layer. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of peanut butter over the ice cream. Dip a butter knife straight down into the ice cream. Gently swirl the knife around in a clockwise motion, creating pretty peanut butter swirls. Do not over-stir, as that will fully mix the peanut butter into the ice cream and remove swirls.

  4. Freeze for 3-6 hours, or until completely frozen. Allow to thaw for 5-20 minutes before scooping. Enjoy!

Adapted from my Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate Smoothie recipe.

Notes

– Store in a freezer-friendly container for up to 2 weeks in the freezer.
– Allow to thaw at room temperature for 5-20 minutes, until firm but scoopable.
– More frozen plant-based treats to try: coconut chocolate chip ice cream, almond joy ice cream, dark chocolate nice cream.

  1. I’ve got my banana slices in the freezer and can’t wait to try making it tonight. I have an ice cream maker. Any tips or experience with one? I saw folks commented they liked the no-churn method, but I’m lazy, I guess. Thanks!

    1. Hi Daphne! After you blend this up, you could try adding it to your ice cream maker. But if you don’t want to take it out, all you have to do is pour the mixture into a container and let it freeze for a few hours. Either way, let me know how it turns out! 🙂

  2. You are my new best friend, and you don’t even know it! Just licking the spatula was enough to make me know I’m going to love this ice cream!

    1. Hehe!! I love that, Darlene. 🙂 I hope you loved the final product. . BFFs forever!! ..

    1. Yes, this is the perfect recipe to help cool down on a hot day! And double yes, it’s such an amazing flavor combo! ☺️

    1. It’s so easy and SO much fun!! I’m planning on swirling everything for a long time to come. Lol! Enjoy!

  3. My three boys and I are going to make this tomorrow for a summer treat. When I announced a healthy peanut butter chocolate almond milk ice cream they lost their minds! Giving them the tools for healthy living! Thanks. .

    1. Hi Stacia! That sounds like a wonderful plan! There’s nothing better than a homemade treat made with family. 🙂 Enjoy!

    1. I’m right there with ya!!! <— as if that wasn’t obvious! LOLOL. 😉 Hope you enjoy this!

  4. Looks easy and yummy! Looking forward to trying this – am wondering why the processor is better than a blender? I find it easier to clean the blender but…

Also, the optional PB Swirl note seems identical to what is in the recipe: “¼ cup unsalted, natural peanut butter or almond butter for paleo option” – or am I misreading?

    1. Thanks Ann! The processor can usually blend things up more evenly and smoothly. I find that ingredients tend to blend really well at the bottom of the blender (near the blades), but not near the top. You’ll just need to scrape down the sides a bit more and be vigilant of all the ingredients mixing well. 😉 Swirl: I listed the ingredients and instructions as optional in Step 3: “OR, optionally, do the following…” So the 2 tablespoons for each swirl is equivalent to 1/4 cup peanut butter. Enjoy!

  5. Hi Demeter, this looks amazing!
I tried adding cocoa powder to your banana peanut butter ice cream recipe recently and the cocoa never got smooth and distributed throughout the ice cream. You can see flecks of it. How long do you process this for? I was aiming to not let the bananas totally defrost. Maybe that doesn’t matter? Maybe because I used coconut cream?
The peanut butter swirl is delicious and I’m loving it in spite of the fleckiness though!
Thanks for dreaming up more delicious ways to win friends and influence people. 😉

    1. Hi Janet! Did you use a food processor or blender? Usually a food processor can blend things a bit more thoroughly. Also, if your cocoa powder is a bit rocky and clumped up to begin with, that can result in flecks. Try sifting the cocoa powder first, then blending it up. Good luck!! .

      1. I used the food processor. I’ll try sifting it next time and see what happens. Thanks!!

    1. Haha what can I say, I love a good peanut butter recipe! Especially if there’s some chocolate in there too. .

  6. Yum! Such a delicious ice cream for summer! I absolutely love that peanut butter swirl over the top and that it is no churn.
