Best Vegan Chocolate Protein Powder – Review

Find out which plant based protein powders taste better (or worse) in the best vegan chocolate protein powder review!

Searching for the best vegan chocolate protein powder out there? Today, I’m reviewing & ranking the best plant based protein powder products out there. Plus, I’ve included a super easy 6 ingredient vegan protein shake & my tools and tips for making your vegan protein powder tastier.

Best Vegan Protein Powder Review pin image

Ahh, vegan protein powder. Sigh. Long sigh. Longer sigh. Where do I even begin? Protein powder alone is no easy thing to eat/taste/have to chug on a daily basis (if not multiple times a day, in some cases). It’s one of the most helpful things to boosting your plant-based diet, and yet, one of the most agonizing. Lol.

As you may have gleaned, I’ve been on a looooong journey tasting, testing, gagging, swishing my mouth vigorously, then tasting, testing, gagging and repeat with plant based vegan protein powder products for nearly a decade.

Point is: vegan protein powder can be nasty!

And then some. But today, let me assure you that this is, in fact, light at the end of the vegan protein powder tunnel—and that light is edible and perhaps even a bit tasty. Erik and I have purchased 15 (updated Dec 2021) 18 of the most well-reviewed, top-selling plant based vegan protein powder products available online, and done everything from shaken them up in basic almond milk smoothies in a blender bottle to blended them up into frosty vegan protein shakes.

Y’all have been loving this vegan protein powder review, so I’m adding more new vegan protein powders every couple of months (most recent update: January 2022). Feel free to email me about any vegan protein powders you’d like me to try!

Note: I also tested all of these vegan protein powders in my 3 Ingredient Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake Recipe. Enjoy!

Vegan Protein Powder Review: the Criteria

Here are our testing parameters/basic testing guidelines to determine the best vegan chocolate protein powder of all time.

Firstly, we excluded any vegan protein powder brands that had terrible reviews online, and ones that had recently dramatically changed their recipe (much to their fans’ chagrin). We reviewed ones that had a rating of 4 stars or more on Amazon, and that had the best overall experience. Then, we went over the following questions when trying each vegan protein powder:

  • How do they taste?
  • How well do they dissolve in unsweetened vanilla almond milk?
  • How many grams of plant based protein per serving?
  • Bonus benefits of this vegan protein powder (according to the company)?
  • Price: Based on list price on Amazon (which typically has the lowest price), not including any additional savings from Subscribe & Save or other discounts/promotions
    • $ = less than $1.50 per serving; $$ = $1.50-$2 per serving; $$$ = more than $2 per serving
  • Overall score: ___

Why Are We Reviewing Vegan Protein Powders Today?

In this day and age, it’s hard to keep up with everything that you have going on in your life while managing to get your protein on. Sometimes you just gotta reach for that vegan protein powder to supplement your daily intake. That could be for gains (muscle gains, y’all), basic nutrition or whatever nutritional goals you may have.

Today, we’re focusing on vegan plant-based protein powder, but there are others on the market with whey, collagen and so forth.

How to Use Vegan Protein Powder

  • Simple, in a blender bottle with water (or milk): this is the simplest, quickest way of preparing your protein powder. Just add a scoop or two into a blender bottle with your favorite milk or even just water, shake away and sip.
  • In a smoothie: my favorite way of incorporating vegan protein powder into my diet. In fact, there’s a super simple recipe below.
  • In cookies, no bake or baked into something

Top 5 Best Vegan Protein Powder – Best Plant Based Protein Powder

Winner – Best Tasting Vegan Protein Powder OVERALL – Best Non-GMO Protein Powder

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Plant, Plant Based Protein

Truly, truly amazing. At the beginning of trying all of these vegan protein powder brands, I thought for sure Orgain would be my favorite. I’ve been drinking it for 3+ years. It’s my go-to, and still will be. However, when I tried Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard’s vegan protein powder, I loved it. Then, I tried it again. And again. And again. Every single time, it was amazing. I’ve started working it into my regular routine—so I can switch things up between my breaks from Orgain. Thus far, Optimum Nutrition is the best non-GMO protein I’ve had!

My Personal Favorite Vegan Protein Powder—Best Plant Based Protein Powder

Orgain Organic Protein Plant Based Protein Powder

As a baker & food blogger, one of my favorite things of all-time is chocolate. Orgain Vegan Protein Powder is my absolute favorite because I’ve had it so many times over 3 years, and I never grow tried of it. The flavor is consistently delicious & mellow enough that I can have it all the time. One of my favorite vegan protein powder hacks for Orgain? Use 1 scoop of chocolate Orgain and 1 scoop of vanilla Orgain when making your vegan protein shake. The combo is fantastic. Then, if you want to amp it up, add in a splash of pure vanilla extract and a few drops of stevia. SO GOOD!

Update: Months later, I’ve found myself reaching for the vanilla Orgain protein powder more than the chocolate (who’d thunk it?). There’s just something about the vanilla flavor that lends itself so tastily to add-ins like spinach, peanut butter and fruits. The vanilla protein powder kind of adds a vanilla ice cream flavor, if you will.

My Must-Have Tools for Vegan Protein Powder Shakes

  • My Favorite Personal Blender: Seriously incredible. I’ve been making vegan protein shakes for over 10 years, and this blender is my absolute favorite. It’s just the right size to make personal smoothies, and is compatible with two different-size cups: one smaller one, one larger one. Best part: it runs by itself and knows exactly how long your smoothie will take. How cool is that?
  • Extra Blender Cups: I highly recommend buying extra cups for your blender. Oftentimes things get super busy and I need to make two more shakes, but none of my blender cups are clean. Blergh!
  • Shaker Bottles: BlenderBottle (small) | BlenderBottle (large). My go-to shaker bottles. There is really nothing else like these bottles. Add vegan protein powder + non-dairy milk, shake and you have the smoothest possible protein shake without any blending. Awesome.
  • Where to Buy Ingredients: the everyday add-ins to my daily vegan protein shakes. MCT Oil for energy + brain boost | Gelatinized Maca Powder for energy | Naked PB Powder (PB2) | Paleo Chocolate Chunks | Raw Cacao Powder | sugar free sweetener: stevia drops or low carb monkfruit drops

Tips for the Best Tasting Vegan Protein Powder Experience

Now, before we get started, I wanted to share my tips for the best tasting vegan protein powder experience—yep, that’s right, experience. Here we go:

  • For shaker bottle vegan protein shakes…
    • I definitely recommend taking the time to blend a protein shake in a blender instead of a shaker bottle. In a blender, you can add frozen bananas, spinach, etc. for better taste and a nutrient boost. But shaker bottles are super convenient, so follow the tips below for the best experience.
    • Add lots of vanilla extract! Or any extract of your choosing. My faves are orange and organic peppermint.
    • Add sweetener. I love using a few drops of stevia or low-carb + keto sweetener.
    • Add spices. Ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg. Play with spices to switch the vegan protein powder shake up. When you have to drink these everyday, they can get pretty tedious without some fun flavor change-ups.
    • Use vanilla almond milk. I’ve made vegan protein shakes with all kinds of non-dairy milk—cashew milk, coconut milk, almond coconut milk, chocolate non-dairy milk. My favorite is unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Try: Blue Diamond’s.
    • MIXING BETTER: always put the liquid in first, then the protein powder, or the vegan protein powder will get stuck on bottom of the cup. OR, if powder is already at the bottom (say you’re bringing it with you to go in your shaker cup, then filling it later), add liquid, then flip the cup upside down and tap it a bit to loosen it from the bottom first, then shake up and down vigorously.
  • For a blended vegan protein shake recipe you can count on (as in, it tastes good!)… use My Everyday Vegan Protein Shake recipe below–it’s at the bottom of this post. 🙂 It’s my go-to, everyday vegan protein shake with 24g of protein per serving, with 18 Net Carbs. I use my favorite fruits, a splash of vanilla, a little sweetener when I’ve had enough of these darn protein shakes, and some veggies to feel good. I highly recommend it!

What’s your personal favorite vegan protein powder?

Well, what did ya think? Are you familiar with any of these vegan protein powder products? Are there new ones you’re seeing on the list that you’re hankering to try? Description

Try out one of the Best Vegan Protein Powders with my favorite, everyday basic vegan protein shake. I highly recommend following the recipe as listed. It’s amazing! 24g of protein per serving, with 18 Net Carbs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ¾ cup unsweetened non-dairy milk (more below)
  • 3/4 cup frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, pineapple)
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate vegan protein powder* (or 1 scoop of this chocolate one)
  • 3 tablespoons vanilla vegan protein powder* (or 1 scoop of this vanilla one)
  • 4 drops liquid stevia (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup frozen spinach
  • 1/2 cup non-dairy milk

Optional

Instructions

  1. This is the blender I use to make my smoothies. It’s easy to use, holds the perfect amount, and can be left to keep blending while I walk away (it runs by itself).
  2. Add all ingredients in the order listed: 3/4 cup non-dairy milk, frozen fruit, chocolate vegan protein powder, vanilla vegan protein powder, stevia, vanilla, spinach and 1/2 cup non-dairy milk. This is the order that I’ve found to create the smoothest shake, without any protein powder getting stuck in a clump anywhere.
  3. Depending on your daily nutritional needs, feel free to add maca powder, peanut powder, nut butter or MCT oil.
  4. Close blender. Blend until smooth and no chunks remain. Enjoy immediately.

  1. I did not realize there were this many brands! Excellent comparison article!
Have you tried Ascent? They have chocolate, chocolate+PB, and vanilla bean; not organic, I think. Also Nutralite Organics chocolate and vanilla?
Also, do you have any comments about making your own protein blend to have a complete amino acid balance? For instance, I’ve heard pea protein is almost complete but a little low in methionine, so rice protein might help supplement that?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Lindsay! I know, it’s amazing how many brands there are out there, and I feel like I find new ones every day. I haven’t tried either of the brands you mentioned, but I’ll be sure to check them out. That chocolate pb sounds delish!

I haven’t tried making my own blend, so unfortunately I don’t have any direct tips. From what I’ve seen in other brands, it does seem like a mix of pea and rice is quite common, so that might be a good place to start. 🙂

  2. Thank you! This is so helpful. I came across your article because I’ve been drinking Shakeology Chocolate Vegan protein powder but IT IS SOOOO EXPENSIVE! $154.00 with tax and shipping! Have you tried Shakeology? I like the taste. I do not like the price. I’m going to try the Optimum Nutrition one you suggested. I’ve also like Arbonne’s chocolate protein powder, which is vegan.

    1. $154?!?! Hoo mama!! That’ll get your wallet nice and stretched! I haven’t tried it, but have heard a lot of things about it. Yeah, try the Optimum Nutrition and also Orgain, and let me know what you think! The orgain vanilla actually exceeds my love for vegan *chocolate* protein powders and I’m usually a huge chocolate nerd. Is the Arbonne better than Shakeology?

  3. I’m a huge fan of Orgain too! Have you tried their plant based protein powder + greens or the super food versions? If so, how did they compare with the original Orgain protein powder? Thanks!

    1. Glad to hear it Maria! I haven’t tried their powder + greens, but I did try the superfood a few years ago and didn’t like it as much as the chocolate or vanilla. Still, it was pretty good overall. Hope this helps!

  4. Hi. Have you tried California Gold Sport Plant Protein. Would like to hear your review. Anyway this review is rather comprehensive. I like it. Thanks.

  5. I found this so helpful buying protein powder
Is so confusing so thank you! I have heard a lot about truvani protein powder have you ever tried it??
Thanks for all your helpful tips and recipes I use them a lot and love them! My new fav is your overnight oats with coconut cream and chocolate chips delish!!

    1. That’s so wonderful to hear, Cheryl! 🙂 I’m glad I could be of help. I haven’t heard of Truvani protein powder, but am trying to stick to vegan protein powders with a 4.5 star rating or above. Some of the reviews do have me a bit concerned lol. Have you tried it? On another note, I’m so happy that you’re enjoying my recipes and tips! Overnight oats are the best!! Sending you big hugs… xo

  6. This is so helpful!! I have only tried the Orgain one, and so I am glad that this one is one of the more highly rated ones. I’m going to have to try that 20/20 one! Bookmarked to reference when I run out of my Orgain!!

  7. This is SO helpful, thank you! I have protein powder in my morning smoothie, and have had a few nasty ones as well as some nice ones, so thanks for all the tips!

  8. Super useful list! I’ve got a kiddo who needs to gain some weight for health reasons and protein drinks are such a great resource to help him gain weight. But after awhile a drink will taste awful so it’s so great to have this rated list to help us find good alternatives!

    1. Thanks Betsy! I’m so happy to hear I could provide a bit of help. 🙂 Good luck to you and your kiddo–it can’t be an easy journey. Let me know if you want me to try another vegan protein powder if you don’t see it on the list. Hugs!

  9. I have tried various protein powders and I totally agree that Orgain is the best one. It is also reasonably priced. However, I do wish they would make additional flavors.

  10. May I suggest you try Ancient Nutrition Protein Powder by Josh Axe. This is the only one that doesn’t upset my stomach. It is made without Pea Protein.
