Delicious Ingredients for Delicious Chocolate Orange Muffins

The most delicious foods are made with delicious ingredients. I mean, it makes sense right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Check out the simply delicious ingredients we’re using today to make the best chocolate orange muffins.

  • Fresh-squeezed orange juice: with a whopping ½ cup of orange juice, we’re talking about bold and beautiful fresh-squeezed orange flavor!
  • Orange zest: not to be outdone by orange juice, we’re mixing in 3 whole tablespoons of orange zest to beautifully complement the two chocolate ingredients in these muffins.
  • Raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Oat flour: my favorite baking flour ever. Oat flour is made with just one ingredient, oats. It works beautifully in these chocolate orange muffins, deliciously buoying chocolate and orange flavors. Here’s how to make oat flour. ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Maple syrup, coconut oil, coconut sugar, vanilla
  • Chocolate chips: two kinds of chocolate in these orange chocolate chip muffins? What is it, our birthdays? ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy twice the amount of chocolate in these muffins with cocoa powder and chocolate chips in the muffin batter. Fancy a dark chocolate and orange muffins recipe? These moist orange chocolate chip muffins are bursting with sweet ‘n tart orange flavor and double the chocolate. What could be better?

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Then, bring out a standard, 12-cup muffin pan. Pop in some unbleached muffin liners or nonstick muffin liners. Set aside.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups oat flour - if using homemade, make sure itโ€™s very finely groundโ€”not coarse.
  • ยฝ cup raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ยผ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

Add-in Ingredients

Optional Topping

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, sift together the dry ingredients: oat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Add water and milk to a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 10-second increments until just warm. This will prevent the melted coconut oil from solidifying once mixed with these liquids.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together all wet ingredients: water, milk, orange juice, orange zest, coconut oil, sugar, maple syrup and vanilla. Whisk until well incorporated.
  • Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients. Whisk until just incorporated, making sure no flour patches remain. Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Pour batter evenly into prepared muffin panโ€”filling each cup about 3/4 of the way for a greater quantity of smaller muffins, or all the way to the top for a smaller quantity of big, domed-top muffins. Optionally, press chocolate chips and orange zest into the tops of each muffin.
  • Bake for 20-26 minutes (on the higher end for larger muffins). Mine took 24 minutes for larger muffins. Insert a toothpick to test for donenessโ€”it should come out mostly dry, with a few muffin bits on it.
  • Place muffin pan on a cooling rack to cool for 30 minutes. Remove muffins from muffin pan and continue cooling on rack until completely cool, 1-3 hours.
  • Enjoy! Storing instructions below.

Notes

Storing Instructions: Store muffins in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Freezing Instructions: Store muffins carefully in a freezer-friendly, airtight container for 1-2 months. Allow to thaw at room temperature for 15-30 minutes before enjoying. Or, heat in the microwave in 10-second increments until warm.
Serving suggestion: After muffins completely cool, theyโ€™re firmer, drier and ready to store. To enjoy as if theyโ€™re fresh-baked (like an hour ago!): heat in 10-second increments until just warm. SO good! Theyโ€™ll become soft and moist again. ๐Ÿ™‚

As always, these are amazing. I miss chocolate orange truffles from when I could still eat dairy, so these sounded perfect when I searched up orange muffins. These muffins are dense and rich. I did not top with anything and used a smaller amount of dairy-free chocolate chips. I would 100% make this recipe again.

Can you make these with general plain flour instead of the oat?

    1. Demeter | Beaming Baker says:

Hi Maisie! I havenโ€™t tried it myself here, so I canโ€™t say for sure. If you do give it a go, let me know how it turns out!
