Learn how to make almond butter with just 1 ingredient and a few minutes! The best homemade almond butter—creamy, simple and delicious.
Have you ever tried making homemade almond butter? Years and years ago, I wouldn’t have even dreamed of trying. But then, I started baking a lot, a lot and realized that store-bought almond butter is freaking expensive!
I mean, do you ever really get used to paying for (or gawking at, then turning your shopping cart sharply away from) a 16 oz. jar of almond butter that’s $16.99?!? Like, have you also seen the ones that go for $22.99 and upward?
Like, is there gold in that almond butter? Or am I just paying for the sexy packaging? Lol.
So today, we’re gonna
learn how to make almond butter with just 1 ingredient and all the flavor. You ready? Let’s make homemade almond butter!
How to Make Almond Butter
Step 1: add almonds to a food processor
Step 1: Add roasted almonds to the canister of the food processor. Here is the food processor that I use to make homemade almond butter.
Step 2: blend almonds until crumbly
Step 2: Blend the almonds until crumbly. This is how the almonds will look part of the way through making almond butter. The almonds are crumbly and dry.
Step 3: almonds release oil, starts to moisten
Step 3: Keep blending. At this stage, you’ll see that the almonds have begun to release oil—and are thus starting to create a paste. Keep going, you’re on your way to making homemade almond butter! Make sure to scrape down the sides of the processor.
Step 4: almonds turn into a thick dough
Step 4: Here, you’ll start to see that much of the oil from the almonds have infiltrated (so to speak) the almond meal (dry almond bits). They’re starting to combine to make this sticky almond butter “dough.” Keep blending!
Step 5: Coarse, slightly crunchy almond butter
Step 5: You’re almost there. You can see that the almond butter “dough” has turned into a coarse, liquidy almond butter. You can stop here if you like your homemade almond butter with bits of almonds in it. Keep going to make creamy almond butter.
Step 6: homemade almond butter is made!
Step 6: Now your homemade almond butter is ready! Wasn’t that easy? Natural, homemade almond butter isn’t going to be perfectly smooth (I mean, even almond butter manufacturers can’t get it super smooth), but it’ll be yummy and ready to use in recipes!

So easy and creamy, my favorite almond butter recipe!
Thatโs awesome! ๐๐
My family loves nut butters! Such a good thing to know that you have this recipe that we can definitely try at home. Thanks for this!
Yes! Itโs so easy to make your own. Glad youโre all enjoying it!
Oh my gosh thank you so much for sharing this!
Youโre so welcome Amanda! ๐
Great recipe! Thank you for such detail.
Can this be preserved like we do jams, tomatoes, etc? With a hot water bath? I am just looking for ways to make this last longer or how stores have a longer expiration date. My husband came home with 30 pounds of peanuts so I need to act fast! Thank you!
Youโre so welcome Lisa! I havenโt tried preserving methods with this recipe, but leaving it in the refrigerator will help extend the freshness a bit. Hope this helps!
Have you ever tried making pumpkin seed butter? I tried once in vitamix and it failed, I also like to soak all nuts/seeds due to anti nutrients and high oxalates… not sure it helps much with the ladder. Jut curious if you’ve tried anything other than almonds/cahsews ๐ I may try cashew in place of almond…
Hi Nicole! I havenโt tried making pumpkin seed butter before, but it sounds like it would be quite the experiment! Iโll have to keep that in mind for future recipe testing. ๐
Hi there,
Would also like to know how long you roast your almonds for and what temp?
thx!
Hi Mo! I typically use almonds that are already toasted instead of roasting them myself. Hope this helps!
What oven temperature is needed to roast almonds, and for how long? This looks so good. And does it matter what kind of almonds, raw or organic?
Mine is ground but pretty stiff and not spreadable. Do I need to process more?
Hi Valerie. Yep, it sounds like youโre going to need to keep grinding it. It can take longer depending on the processor, nuts, etc. When it looks like the last photo in the step-by-step section, then youโre good to go! Hope this helps. ๐
I only can immagine the flavor of this butter! A must try recipe!
Oh yes, the flavor is out of this world! .
For how long you need to blend it ?
Hi there! It should be around 10 minutes or so. ๐
